Magic 2014 DOTP: Ignite Your Spark by Cryptcrawler Magic 2014 DOTP: Ignite Your Spark by Cryptcrawler
1 of about 6 separate commissions I had the pleasure of illustrating for Magic the Gathering's 2014 Duels of the Planeswalkers campaign.
This one was really hard to nail down. It was one of those pieces where you basically have to choose how you're going to lose; because she is an extremely difficult character to work with.
She's gotta be:
-Tough, but not too tough.
-Aggressive, but not too aggressive.
-Pretty, but not too pretty
-Tom-Boy, but not too tomboy

You get the idea.

Yes, I know there is some anatomical and perspective stuff that is out of wack here, but it is what it is.
I'm one of those people who sees only the failures in my art and how it "coulda, shoulda, woulda been better", which is ultimately good; it always keeps me striving for excellence, which is a great place to be if you ask me.

So I learned a lot on this one...

After I threw my chair against the wall a few times.

Is there any chance you'll release a print of the MtG promo poster where Chandra's hair isn't on fire?  I love her look in that!

Her armor and the posture are awesome, but there are a few errors I want to adress. She lacks shadows on some points, which causes an strange impression. Also, the fire on her head is plain weird; is like she's bald and her head is on fire.

Hi, Brad,
I really wonder about one technical thing (yo brushes ;P) how do you adjust/wrap the chainmail texture around the body. I've been playing with that but so far unsuccessfully.
It would make a good little tutorial if you had some free time that I know i so scarce <wink wink>

man, its very well mastered. but id like to give you an advice, just a cool advice - dont loose your style! i feel that you are loosing your trademark, you went from paintings looking a little bit plastic to paintings looking a little bit like photos, almost like matte painting. i do not think its bad but i think someday it will loose that classic painting feel that we all love you know. a little bit plastic is not bad after all. but well, if you feel great and comfortable with this who am i to say anything.

cheers buddy

Just a suggestion, you may want to be careful uploading such high res images. I know that Wizards doesn't appreciate people take the high res files and printing their own stuff from them. Awesome job though! The face shadows seem a bit awkward (but then I'm not sure what shadows look like when their hair is on fire ><).

In most cases, artists are fully allowed to showcase their work once it has been published. WotC, and most companies, understand that artists need to do this in order to survive the business. 3rd parties taking images and profiting off them is indeed an unfortunate byproduct that sometimes occurs. I believe the WotC contract demands that the artist alert them if they notices this happening - but that is as far as their responsibility goes. High res, tight, awesome paintings is what Cryptcrawler provides, and he needs to be able to show that. Just my 2.

Well it's entirely up to him. I personally LOVE artists who post high res images of their works (which I promptly use as my new desktop background =D). I was simply commenting because I remember reading how Steve Argyle had posted a super high res version of his art for MTG which was soon taken from DeviantArt and printed without permission and Wizards wasn't happy about it. =/

Yes, I've got a Crytcrawler high res image as one of my backgrounds. :) In Mr. Argyle's case, was WotC unhappy with him for posting it? Or with the guy to stole it and printed it?

I don't think Wizards was particularly happy with either. He did get an email asking him to take it down though. But like I said, if they don't have a problem with it, bring on more high-res images!!
