Concept - Subject Zero Final by Cryptcrawler Concept - Subject Zero Final by Cryptcrawler
Ok, so heres a creature concept update, with a few notes for anyone who may care.

Gone is the squid-puss and skeletal changes to the skull, it was simply too exotic.
Without giving too much away: its essential to the story that the main antagonist have strong human qualities, so while I liked the idea of the creature essentially being my monster from "Containment Breach Sub-Level 5" it just wasnt "right".
Im going to go ahead and keep up the old ideas; maybe someone may find it useful/entertaining to see the twists and turns that I come across during developing an idea; I think its important to play when your exploring ideas and give yourself the room and freedom to create crap instead of miticulously thinking and rethinking through every line.

You can see all the various combinations I fought with along the lower and right borders of the piece before deciding on the final creature.

While some of you may find the new design to be too conservative, please understand the approach im taking is going to more reliant on using dramatic lighting, camera angles, facial expression and body language to deliver the impact im looking for as opposed to over-the-top design-sense.
A lot of my motivation for creating this graphic novel comes from my adoration for my favorite filmakers like early Ridley Scott and 80's era John Carpenter.

Again, this is just a rough ill use as a guide for the final render, which in turn will be a master for reference since none of these creatures or characters exist.

I cant thank you all enough for the interest, enthusiasm and commentary - its always very inspiring for me.

God Bless,
Brad

what a terrifying and intriguing character! I think the fact he maintains the humanistic qualities is what makes him so threatening, because if the design deviates too far it's almost like we as humans can detach ourselves from it. I can't wait to see where this all goes!

I kind of have a visual for your story, I don't know why but I refer to Predator 2. The main character was an afro-american (like yours if I am not mistaken) and he was almost an ordinary cop but went trough hell while chasing or running from the predator. And your guy reminds me of him. And the monster would be the predator.
I don't know what do you have in mind for your story, but that's how I unintentionally imagine it. :)
Good luck and I will stay tuned for more.

You're right. But (hopefully) time will be in a severe shortage soon. Trying to get a new business up and running. There's always the days off, though.

One quick question: What do you do when your muse has left town and you can't find her anymore?

Thanks in advance !

Hmmm.
Fall for another, but give yourself some time to mourn the loss.
Be careful that the new one really isnt the old one in disguise though, they like to do that.

Im not going to comment on the technical side of the concept because I think you have handled that department very well, as always I must say...

Ive read all the comments and it curious how everybody has his own perspective and taste (no tentacles, with tentacles, head off, etc...)

Being almost 35 I can relate to your preferences so I really like your approach. I think the character has an elephant man feel to it (great movie by the way...). His head is smaller and besides being deformed has gentle lines, wich brings the humanity factor to the table. If the head and lines wich define the face had the same proportion and brute feeling of the rest of the body it would pass the big strong stupid archetype kind of character you probably dont want to pass (correct me if Im wrong).

Keep inspiring us handsome brad :)

Im really excited you caught the elephant-man vibe because thats exactly what I was hinting at - good eye!
And its a great film - Gary Oldman's best acting IMHO.

I wont correct you because your not wrong - I want there to be some intelligence and sentience in there.

Thanks for the uplifting feedback man, its nice to know there are folks out there who can smell what im cooking!

He still looks pretty freakishly mutated, though this is probably more believably originated from a human than the other. I'm sure you'll find a use for your "Containment Breach" monster somewhere. Or maybe they can just make it into a sci-fi/horror flick. ;)

Looking forward to seeing more from this project!

Interesting physiology, and indeed it is creepy!

But to be honest, even though they were too exotic, I found the tentacle-squiddiness to give it much more character!

It's a variation I don't find to be common when it comes to genetic mutations or whatever the core of "The Human Condition" is based around.
But since human qualities are the most important, I agree with they direction of this design.

But my opinion is that a character should have features that makes them instantly recognizable and unique.
And the body structure is somewhat striking in it's appearance(well done), however the head is a bit off, if I must say.
I don't know what, but there's something that just doesn't seem right... to me.

I'm just expressing my opinion.
Hope it might be of help in any way =D

Looking forward to the next concept!

There is supposed to be something off about his head - thats the idea; to create tension and discomfort.
