Concept: Skeletal Anamolies by Cryptcrawler Concept: Skeletal Anamolies by Cryptcrawler
Another prop piece rough for the graphic novel.

The current idea is that the mandibula is no longer a hinged joint, but a ball-joint that is able to swivel outwards to emcompass a human head.

The hard plate has fused with the maxilla and upper dental arch that creates a sort of "beak" or hook to make prying a human skull apart via cranial sutures more effective.

Mmmmmm...brains.

With the beak, plus the tentacles in the x-ray in the other piece, I'm guessing Illithid?

Oh man, I always love some good skull and skeleton concept art, and this is beautiful! Changing the mandible joint from a hinge to a ball-in-socket is a brilliant idea.

I actually saw this image before I saw the rest of the concepts that you just posted. I was surprised to learn that this is the skull of that big tentacle-faced brute that you painted a while back. I wouldn't have expected to see such human-derived anatomy underneath that guy's skin. However, in this case the unexpected is a good thing. I love the depth this adds to that creature's concept, and I can't wait to see where you go with this project.

Thanks very much m0ai!

Im very grateful you appreciate it and theres a very specific reason why the skull is so human =)

Mutagenic experiments on human fetuses? A horrible alternate course of hominid evolution from a hypothetical future or parallel dimension? A...um...well, I'm out of ideas. Guess I'll just wait and see.:)

I love this! I bet he has a helluva dental bill...

I am curious, when you draw a human (well, sort of) skull, do you have an actual skull or model skull as a reference, or do you use pictures? Or none at all? It's something I want to get better at, and I've been looking at some museum replica things...

I use a book that I keep forgetting to mention called: Atlas Of The Human Anatomy For The Artist, by Stephen Rogers Peck. Its a book from 1951 that has incredible illustrations in it detailing the geography of the skeletal and muscular systems - Its the perfect guide to create monsters to; it really breaks down the form and function of the human body.

Hmm...sounds familiar. *looks at shelf*

... I have that book! It's the main reference I look to when I'm confused about anatomy (along with with a book called Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth...I can't really emulate his style but there's a lot of great poses to look at there.)

Clearly, I should study it in a more in-depth way, since the human anatomy is hard for me. Thanks for the input!

And you know, for such a useful book, it was really inexpensive, unlike some art books.
